Mercer Bear Day

General Paper Presentations

This presentation was given by Emily Heron and Chris on two interesting topics covering their research. The first presentation, by Emily, concerned the data repository CEDIAC, which contained over 500 gigabytes of data and was plagued with issues concerning the convoluted storage design that made it difficult to understand how to navigate the information. The work that had been done to help this problem involved the creation of a system that could help automate the creation of meta data tags to image files in the repository to make it possible to search for more relevant data. The second presentation, with Chris, discussed the issues in replicating a molecule design of a "mercury chelator" that would help in isolating mercury in the blood. The proposed design should help with dealing with mercury contamination, however, work in replicating this design using the computer systems at mercer has proven to be difficult and may show some issue in either the methodology of the original molecule or in the replication here.

Engineering Expo

At the engineering expo we see the results of students efforts at research projects and how their far their work has come. The hallway used to present these topics is packed with students that created the posters that provide the basic overview of their work, talking and sharing their ideas with each other and curious visitors. These topics could range from several different topics including a tremor bracelet for parkinsons patients to the generation of drug eluting polymer nanofibers to be used in a biliary stent.
